Wendell Berry and This American Life
Reading a new book by an author I had never heard of before. Wendell Berry.

He was suggested to me by a coworker.

I'm reading the novel "The Memory of Old Jack", which so far is a real treat. It's a bit sad, a bit hopeful, and it's sort of like reading an older version of a "This American Life" episode. One of those ones where they just concentrate on one story the whole time.

I love it.

Speaking of "This American Life". http://www.thisamericanlife.org/, I would like to mention my favorite episode ever. I was in college, and was listening to NPR, and in a strange state of mind where I was working all day really hard at school and then going home and making strange art from crayons and scribbling doodles. Barely sleeping.

Anyway, I think it was a Saturday in the winter, and I was in my little tiny studio apartment in the living room/dining room/kitchenette where I did my artwork, and I heard this story come on. I was utterly captivated. It hooked me on the show immediately.

Anyway, all the episodes are free if you listen to them over the internet, and free if you listen to the weekly podcast. (If you want old episodes on your ipod however, they're about a buck each to download).

This is the one I loved. I highly recommend it. Spooky and fun. A full three act-er.

It's called, "The House on Loon Lake".

More Halloween Costume
photo
See quick photo of me in converted jacket.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to dye it the right shade of grey. It's a sort of olive drab right now.

Otherwise I'd say I did a good job.

Found nike sneakers cheap, an eighties looking watch, planning on stealing some white socks from Adam and I have a pair of blue jeans. Then I just needed the 'Flynn's shirt, (which I already had curtesy of Adam and my birthday and the fabulous jacket with red patches on the arms.

Go Space Paranoids!

I love cult films. All nerdy and cultish.

If I really want to be nerdy I will sew on the red line on his left side at the bottom of the jacket. Costume nerd-dom!

Halloween Costume 2008
photo
Working on the Halloweeny costume.
My first one in a really long time.
Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I almost never get to celebrate it.
However, I have often wondered why that doesn't bother me as much as it should. And yesterday I figured it out.
In my world, every DAY is a sort of Halloween!
I wear hats with ears.
I wear silly socks.
I grin at businessmen in the subway while doing the above and they either smile back unexpectedly or look away like I'm a crazy person.
And it's all very Halloweeny.
So I guess it's ok.
I'm going to be Kevin Flynn (see picture above) from Tron. He's the uber cool Jeff Bridges character who owns his own arcade and gets sucked into a computer game-world where leotards light up with sparkly colors.
Right now I'm converting a thrift store find jacket into the jacket above. Not so easy, but totally worth it.
The art projects are putting some ease on the fact that I am really dissatisfied and upset in other areas of my life. It's nice to have something to fall back on that isn't alcohol or video games. Art can heal!!!!
Or at least bandage.

Jacabunnies and fun stuff
photo
Jacabunnies are so cute! Cute cute cute!!!! I fell in love with little Mineola over at Kitlane's Etsy Shop. So cute! So I had to make a little image of her. I stitched her out of polar fleece with some beads and a button I had lying around. I'm very much in love with her now. More pictures of her here

And then of course I bought myself an Ursabob by the name of Pippi who is cute as the button that is her nose! I wish I had enough money to get a little fleet of these guys!

So very moominland-like these creatures!
